Our History

The Taber and District Community Adult Learning was first organized in 1972 when the Taber School Division responded to correspondence from Advanced Education. Jack Herman coordinated the first further education classes. This was a very small part of his job description with the Taber School Division. At this time, there was no involvement from rural representatives or other agencies. Some of the first courses offered were: conversational German and French.

The first council was organized by Jack Herman and Jean Stone in about 1974.  Toni Townsend was a rep on the council in the Hays area before she was hired as the coordinator in 1976. She was the first coordinator hired by the school board.

She was hired to work part-time and operated out of her home. Toni helped to establish the council which included volunteer reps, Alberta Agriculture, Town of Taber Parks and Recreation and the School Board. She planned Taber courses and coordinated council affairs. Popular courses included macramé, quilting, and conversational French. The council held monthly meetings and the office was situated in the Town Administration Office.

Anne Wilson was hired as the second coordinator in 1980. Her hours of work were part-time and her office was at the Taber School Division. Meetings were still held monthly and one of the most popular courses was computers. The school division was actively involved in council affairs and promoting parenting courses.

In December of 1984, Marg Wickstrom, then Parks and Recreation Director took over the role of coordinating council affairs. In August of 1985, Jane Brenner was hired as the part-time coordinator for the council. This position became full-time in 1992.
